To ensure the health, safety and welfare of the community, the department is charged with the responsibility of animal control. The primary emphasis of the animal control officer is the enforcement of city ordinances relating to rabies innoculations and leash laws. The animal control officer also maintains and operates the Cordele Animal Shelter.
In recent years, animal control has placed more efforts in identifying and handling dogs that are considered dangerous or potentially dangerous under the City Code and State Law.
